I Have No Money, How Can I Buy Or Build A Tiny House?

There are many reasons people have become interested in tiny houses. One of the move prevalant is that people have become very dissatisfied with paying the mortgages on traditional homes or the high rent so many areas typically charge for housing.

Because of high costs associated with traditional housing (almost 40% of the average person's take-home pay in The United States) many of us have found ourselves left with very little money.
If you are interested in purchasing a tiny house, you essentially have two options:
  1. Pay cash for a tiny house (or the materials to build one yourself)
  2. Finance a tiny house (or borrow the money to build one yourself).
With both options, you'll need some cash to get the ball rolling as most lenders won't give you money upfront without a down payment. Oh, then there's the need for good credit, but that's a separate topic.

If you have no money for a down payment or to pay cash for your tiny house, you'll need to change something financially in a significant way. This is because what you are doing currently isn't working for you.

Here are some ideas to generate some extra cash:
  • Take on a roommate or Airbnb a room to help with mortgage or rent
  • Become a roommate to lower your monthly housing costs
  • Take on an additional part-time job and pocket that money
  • Figure out ways to add value at your job to increase your income
  • Make things and sell them on Etsy or at your local farmer's market
  • Sell things you have lying around that have value
  • Slash your current expenses. Ditch Netflix and unlimited data plans
  • Start a side business. What are you good at or passionate about?

This list was generated from things we have done for ourselves that worked in the past and from the countless people we have seen do this for themselves first-hand that simply had a dream to live tiny and went for it.

At Tiny House Listings, we are not advocates of debt. We do however believe that living in a tiny house is a means to an end and in the long-run can save you alot of money by slashing your household expenses. Once you move into your tiny house, don't stop doing some of the ideas mentioned above! Keep at it until your tiny house is paid for of maybe even after that!
